Obesity Treatment and Management Program

If you have been experiencing shortness of breath, fatigue, osteoarthritis, GERD, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes or even certain types of cancer as obesity-related health conditions, you are not alone. According to The Journal of American Medical Association in 2014, more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of adults and 17% of youth in the U.S. are obese, and suffer from one or several of obesity-related health conditions resulting from excess body fat.

WHAT IS OBESITY?

Obesity is a serious but complex issue to address. Obesity results from a combination of causes and contributing individual and environmental factors. Individual factors include genetics, metabolism rate, medication use, dietary and physical activity habits or behaviors, while environmental factors include social, economic and cultural influences.

Because of individual and environmental factors, it is extremely challenging to lose a significant amount of weight with diet and exercise alone. If you have tried traditional weight loss methods or programs but are not losing weight or have not been able to keep off the weight loss, it is not reflective of your lack of trying or will power. Instead, it reflects the individual and environmental barriers that you are up against.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY?

Weight gain usually happens over time. Most people know when they’ve gained weight. Some of the signs of overweight or obesity include:

  • Clothes feeling tight and needing a larger size.
  • The scale showing that you’ve gained weight.
  • Having extra fat around the waist.
  • A higher than normal body mass index and waist circumference.
  • Weight related health issues like shortness of breath, fatigue, joint pains, sleep aepna, hypertension, high blood pressure, stroke or diabetes

HOW ARE OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY DIAGNOSED?

Overweight and obesity are not the same. Rather, they represent different points on the same path of weight, ranging from underweight to obese. Where you fall on this path is determined by Body Mass Index (BMI).

BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) FOR ADULTS
BMI is a measure of weight proportionate to height that applies to adult men and women. BMI is an estimate of body fat, and it’s a good gauge of your risk for diseases that occur with more body fat. You can calculate your BMI by using our BMI Calculator.

BMI categories
Under 18.5
18.5 -24.9
25.0 – 29.9
30.0 – 39.9
40.0 and above
Official designation
Underweight
Normal weight
Overweight
Obese
Extreme obesity

Generally, BMI is considered an effective way to evaluate whether a person is overweight or obese. However, it does have some limits. BMI may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build by putting them in the overweight range. However, these people are not considered overweight because muscle tissue weighs more than fat tissue. It also may underestimate body fat in older people and others who have lost muscle.

WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE
Measurement of waist circumference may be a better indicator for the possible health risks related to overweight and obesity in adults.

If you have abdominal obesity and most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at increased risk for coronary heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. The risk goes up with a waist size that’s greater than 35 inches for women or greater than 40 inches for men.

HOW ARE OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY TREATED?

Successful weight-loss treatments include setting goals and making lifestyle changes, such as eating fewer calories and being physically active. Medicines and weight-loss or bariatric surgeries such as gastric bypass, gastric band and gastric sleeve surgery are options for some people if lifestyle changes aren’t enough.

In addition to the more invasive traditional bariatric surgeries, today, we have new FDA-approved minimally invasive weight loss treatment options of ReShape and AspireAssist to help obese patients with their weight loss. Both procedures are one-of-a-kind and cutting edge in the weight loss industry. ReShape and AspireAssist provide a new safe and effective non-invasive weight loss treatment option that was not previously available so patients now have more and better weight loss options available to them.
